Saint Luke's Anglican Hospital
Although the main focus of The Nazareth Project, Inc. continues to be Nazareth Hospital and School of Nursing, The Nazareth Project continues to honor its relationship with Saint Luke's Hospital, Nablus, West Bank, forwarding donations designated to support the difficult and important work and mission of the Anglican Hospital.
Founded in 1901 by a group of German Anglicans, the hospital continues to serve residents of Nablus, the Old Testament city of Schechem. Today it is one of four hospitals that provide healthcare to Nablus' growing population of 450,000 people, mostly Muslim, and three refugee camps. St. Luke's Hospital operates under the auspices of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East.
The hospital has fifty-five beds, three operating rooms and three intensive care beds. Services also include obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics and orthopedics, and annually 7,500 admissions are treated. Of the 100 person staff, 75% are Muslim, working side by side with Christian care givers. Ninety nine percent of St. Luke's patients are Muslim.
Almost half of all patients in the West Bank have no insurance. More than a quarter of patients at St. Luke's are unable to pay for care.
Currently, the hospital sees 15 emergency cases per night and until recently has not had an emergency room. Now that one is being built, a need for equipment for it, as well as upgrading X-ray equipment, is of primary importance.
Nazareth Project has been interested in helping with this development by providing a course on emergency medicine for a staff physician at St. Luke's. All funds specified for St. Luke's are wired to that hospital.
